Could the whispers echoing within Baume Loubière still recount tales of prehistoric inhabitants? Here, at the entrance of this intriguing cave in Marseille’s 13th arrondissement, time seems to fold upon itself. Baume Loubière, meaning “wolf’s lair” in Provençal, hints at a wild past. Discovered in 1829 by J. Simonet, the cave’s true age stretches back over a billion years. Imagine the echoes of those who sought shelter within these limestone walls during the Neolithic era, nearly 9,000 years ago. Baume Loubière provided refuge, a storehouse for provisions, and even a workshop for pottery. The entrance could be easily concealed, and a reliable water source within ensured survival, especially during the harsh ice ages. In 1893, the secrets of Baume Loubière began to emerge. Flint knives, scrapers, bone punches, and pottery shards, some bearing the marks of a potter’s wheel, were discovered. These artifacts painted a vivid picture of life within the cave. But Baume Loubière also holds a darker tale. In 1898, the cave was sealed following the tragic murder of a young girl. This grim event halted exploration and shrouded the cave in an air of mystery. It wasn’t until 1930 that the cave reopened, transformed into a tourist attraction, complete with electric lights and a restaurant. Even the silver screen couldn’t resist the allure of Baume Loubière. In 1954, the cave served as a backdrop for the film “La Peau de l’ours,” starring Jean Richard. However, this renewed interest came at a cost. A geologist pilfered artifacts and bones, lost forever to the scientific community. Baume Loubière’s time as a tourist spot eventually ended. After a brief stint as a nightclub, the city of Marseille closed the cave in 1989. Today, the entrance remains sealed, a silent guardian of the stories within. Yet, the whispers of the past linger. Will Baume Loubière reveal its secrets once more? Only time will tell.
