Perched on a cliff edge, the Baume des Houx holds secrets from millennia ago. This spot isn’t just another cave entrance. It’s a portal to Provence’s ancient past. Imagine the wind whistling through this very opening. Picture yourself transported back thousands of years.

Here at the Baume des Houx, archaeological studies reveal a story etched in bone. In the Var department of France, this site yielded a fascinating find. Researchers discovered a bone assemblage here consisting mainly of ungulate phalanges. These are essentially toe bones from domestic animals.

But what makes this discovery truly remarkable is the condition of the bones. They showed signs of significant digestion. Scientists concluded that these remains came from the nest of a Gypaetus barbatus, also known as the bearded vulture.

The Baume des Houx, therefore, represents the first discovery of a bearded vulture nest in Provence. This discovery tells us about the animals in the region. It paints a picture of life here long ago.

Pottery shards were also found near the bones. These shards likely date back to the Bronze Age or early Iron Age. However, it remains unconfirmed if the pottery is as old as the bones.

The presence of domesticated species suggests the nest was occupied sometime after the Neolithic period. The Baume des Houx offers a unique glimpse into the dietary habits of these ancient birds. It also shows the presence of humans and their domesticated animals.

Imagine a bearded vulture soaring above the Massif de l’Étoile. This mountain range stretches north of Marseille. The Baume des Houx, a part of this landscape, provides a haven for diverse flora and fauna. The Massif de l’Étoile’s unique environment supports various plant species. Holm oak and pubescent oak thrive here. You can also find Scots pine.

The Massif de l’Étoile also has a rich human history. Early human presence is shown in the Baume des Houx finds. Throughout history, the area served as pastureland. It was also a source of wood. Monastic communities once inhabited this mountain.

The name “Massif de l’Étoile” means “Mountain of the Star.” This name may come from its orientation. The mountain lies north of Marseille, towards the North Star.

From this vantage point at the Baume des Houx, one can appreciate the layers of history. The prehistoric birds. Early human settlements. All converge in this spot.

Today, as you stand here, consider the echoes of the past. The Baume des Houx is more than just a cave entrance. It’s a testament to the enduring story of life in Provence. The Baume des Houx remains a significant site. It provides valuable insights. It connects us to the distant past.
