Known as Paringgi Malai to Tamils which means foreigner’s hill, Batu Feringgi. Batu Feringgi means the place where Westerners came ashore. The Malay word batu means rock. It refers to the rocky shoreline. We’re now in Batu Feringgi a suburb of George Town.
It lies on Penang Island’s northern coast. It’s about 11 km northwest of the city center. Batu Feringgi is Penang’s prime beach destination. Locals and tourists flock here. Several high-rise hotels cater to the tourist influx. They line the 4 km stretch of beaches.
Let’s rewind to 1592. An Englishman named Sir James Lancaster arrived. He began pillaging vessels around Penang Island. For much of its recent history Batu Feringgi was quiet. Urbanization began in the 1970s transforming it.
The word “ferringhi” evolved over time. It started as “peringgi” in Classical Malay. It referred to Portuguese conquistadors. Later it applied to all Europeans. It connects to Thai and Khmer words for foreigners. These words all stem from the Indian word “firangī”.
Batu Feringgi offers various water sports. Parasailing is a popular choice. On clear days you can see Mount Jerai. It’s in the neighboring state of Kedah. Batu Feringgi is also famous for its night market. You can find merchandise and street food there.
The urbanization in the 1970s brought hotels and condos. These offered sea views overlooking the Malay Peninsula. However seawater quality deteriorated. This led to jellyfish infestations.
In 2004 the Indian Ocean tsunami hit hard. Batu Feringgi was among the worst-hit areas. Sadly 52 lives were lost in Penang.
As of 2020 Batu Feringgi had a population of 9046. Ethnic Chinese make up over 45%. Malays form another two-fifths. Expatriates comprise nearly 16%. Ethnic Indians closely follow.
The coastal Jalan Batu Ferringhi is the main road. It’s part of Federal Route 6. Traffic congestion is common due to tourism. Rapid Penang buses serve the area. They connect Batu Feringgi to various destinations. These include the airport and Queensbay Mall.
Batu Ferringhi offers a primary school and an international school. The night market is a major attraction. Souvenirs DVDs and artworks are sold at bargain prices. Food stalls offer Penang’s street cuisine.
