Imagine yourself in 1942. The Battlebox isn’t just a building. It’s the nerve center of Malaya Command. Deep beneath Fort Canning Hill. This bombproof bunker witnessed history’s turning point. The British the Australians and the Indians fought bravely. They faced 70 days of brutal fighting. They were low on supplies. Facing a determined enemy. The Japanese 25th Army led by the “Tiger of Malaya” Lieutenant-General Tomoyuki Yamashita. They triumphed with fewer soldiers.

This is where Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival made the agonizing decision. The unconditional surrender of 120000 men. A surrender that signaled the beginning of the end for the British Empire. The start of Singapore’s darkest chapter. The Battlebox wasn’t just a place of defeat. It was a hub of activity. With 29 rooms. Rooms filled with strategists and officers. Rooms where plans were made and messages were sent. The Battlebox was alive with the tension of war.

It housed a sophisticated communication system. Vacuum suction message tubes. These tubes connected the rooms. Creating a network of whispers. A silent network. These tubes delivered crucial messages. The thud of the arriving messages a constant sound. The Battlebox wasn’t just a place for making decisions. It was a place for decoding secrets. In the cipher room messages were encoded and decoded. They were then destroyed. Leaving no trace.

After the war the Battlebox was abandoned. Forgotten for over 40 years. It lay silent. A tomb of secrets. Yet it wasn’t entirely deserted. A journalist and her photographer snuck in. They discovered chilling remnants of the past. A blood stained stretcher. Fungus-covered toilets. The skeletal remains of a dog. Their story was published in the Straits Times.
