On this very ground, a desperate struggle for freedom ignited. The Battle of Pinaglabanan Plaque marks a pivotal moment in Philippine history. It commemorates the first major battle of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule. The Battle of Pinaglabanan, also known as the Battle of San Juan del Monte, unfolded on August 30, 1896.

Andres Bonifacio, leader of the Katipunan, a secret revolutionary society, led his troops to attack El Polvorin, a Spanish powder magazine in San Juan del Monte. The Katipuneros, armed mostly with bolos and bamboo spears, faced Spanish forces equipped with Mauser rifles. Despite their inferior weaponry, the Katipuneros, numbering between 800 and 1000, fought fiercely against the Spanish troops. They achieved initial success, capturing some civil guards. However, Spanish reinforcements arrived, including the 73rd “Jolo” Regiment. This regiment, comprised mostly of Filipino soldiers under Spanish officers, was armed with Remington Rolling Block rifles. The arrival of these reinforcements turned the tide of the battle. The Spanish forces, though smaller in number, inflicted heavy casualties on the Katipuneros. Around 150 Katipuneros were killed, and over 200 were captured.

This devastating defeat at the Battle of Pinaglabanan forced Bonifacio to retreat towards the Pasig River. Although a setback, the battle ignited a firestorm of resistance. It sparked further uprisings across Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog. The Battle of Pinaglabanan became a symbol of Filipino courage and the unwavering desire for independence. The Battle of Pinaglabanan Plaque, installed in 1969 by the National Historical Commission, serves as a reminder. It stands as a testament to the bravery of those who fought and died on this ground, paving the way for the Philippines’ eventual freedom from Spanish colonial rule.
