Weren’t those guns impressive? We stand before Battery O’Rourke a relic of coastal defense. This concrete giant on the Marin Headlands protected San Francisco Bay. Built between 1903 and 1905 Battery O’Rourke was part of the Endicott Period fortifications. These were designed to guard against naval attacks. Imagine the soldiers stationed here. They manning four 3-inch rapid-fire guns. Each gun could fire a 15-pound shell five miles. The guns were strategically positioned to protect Rodeo Beach from enemy landings. Battery O’Rourke wasn’t just a battery. It was named after Colonel Patrick Henry O’Rorke a hero of the Civil War. He fell at Gettysburg in 1863. His sacrifice is remembered here at this very spot. The battery functioned without motors or hoists. Each shell and powder charge came in a self-contained 27-pound cartridge. Soldiers easily carried these. Life at Battery O’Rourke was far from glamorous. The soldiers had no power plant. They relied on Battery Guthrie for electricity. Later they used commercial power. The battery saw action during World War II. It remained active until 1945. Today Battery O’Rourke is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The guns are gone. The concrete structure stands as a monument to a bygone era. A testament to the dedication of those who served here. A reminder of San Francisco’s rich history and defenses.
