Gazing up at this seemingly ordinary hill, it’s hard to believe it hides a story of military might. This, my friends, is Battery Howe-Wagner. Battery Howe-Wagner was once a vital part of San Francisco’s coastal defense. Constructed in 1895, it boasted four pits, each armed with four powerful 12-inch mortars. These mortars could hurl projectiles a staggering eight miles, protecting the city and the bay from enemy warships. Battery Howe-Wagner wasn’t just any battery. Its unique cross-shaped design, known as an “Abbott Cross,” gave it a 360-degree field of fire. This meant it could defend against attacks from any direction, targeting both ships at sea and potential landing sites on the beaches. Originally named Battery Howe, it was later divided in 1902. The western pits were renamed Battery Arthur Wagner, while the eastern pits retained the original name. The battery was named for two distinguished military figures. Colonel Albion P. Howe, a veteran of the Mexican-American and Civil Wars, and Colonel Arthur L. Wagner, a military secretary known for his service in the Spanish-American War. Today, nature has reclaimed much of Battery Howe-Wagner. The pits are buried, covered by earth and thick brush. While access to the battery is restricted, standing here, you can almost hear the echoes of the past. Imagine the roar of those mortars, the shouts of the soldiers, the tension in the air. Battery Howe-Wagner may be hidden, but its story is a powerful reminder of San Francisco’s rich military history.
