Boom. That’s the sound echoing in your minds. The boom of a 500-pound dynamite shell launched from Battery Dynamite. Right here on these very bluffs. Battery Dynamite a name that whispers of power and forgotten warfare. It’s more than just ruins. It’s a story etched in concrete and steel.

This wasn’t just any battery. It was experimental. Unlike most batteries named for people this one took its name from its weapons. Three 15-inch dynamite guns. These weren’t your typical cannons. They fired dynamite projectiles propelled by compressed air. Imagine the engineering feat. Each gun and carriage cost a staggering $60000. They were installed by the Pneumatic Dynamite Gun Company. The guns were emplaced by December 1895.

The three guns were positioned 85 feet apart each slightly lower than the last. This clever design allowed air reservoirs to be tucked into underground vaults. Each gun had a range that depended on the size of its explosive payload. A 50-pound load could reach up to 5000 yards. A 500 pounder had a more modest range of 2000 yards.

The dynamite itself came from the Giant Powder Company of San Francisco. The shells were fascinating. They were filled with explosive gelatin. Its composition a secret blend of nitroglycerin guncotton camphor and carbonate of magnesia. But the real magic was the compressed air. Two massive cylinders provided the force. The shells were loaded at a 7-degree angle and fired at a 30-degree elevation.

The whole operation was surprisingly high-tech for its time. The guns were trained and fired electrically. One man the gunner controlled everything. The rate of fire wasn’t particularly impressive. Gun number one could manage five rounds in about eight minutes. But the technology was cutting edge. A massive steam-driven compressor generated the compressed air. It could produce 20000 pounds of pressure. This powerhouse and its air storage tanks weighed a combined 37 and a half tons.

The guns fired for a short period. They were tested in December 1895. They even participated in test firings during the Spanish-American War. However the Army soon deemed them obsolete. In 1901 the guns and their impressive machinery were deemed obsolete. They were dismantled and sold for scrap in 1904. Battery Dynamite’s firepower was silenced.

But the story doesn’t end there. The battery’s structures endured. The powerhouse became a power plant for Fort Scott. The buildings served as command posts. They even offered temporary housing during both World Wars. Today you see the remnants of that history the concrete foundations the pillboxes. These silent sentinels stand as a testament to Battery Dynamite. A monument not just to warfare but also to ingenuity adaptation and the enduring spirit of this remarkable site.
