Gazing out at the Golden Gate, can you imagine the hidden dangers lurking beneath the waves? Right here, overlooking the breathtaking expanse, lies Battery Crosby. Battery Crosby played a crucial role in safeguarding San Francisco. It protected the vital underwater minefields during a time of escalating global tensions. Battery Crosby was completed in 1900. It bristled with two formidable 6-inch guns mounted on disappearing carriages. These guns, capable of firing two rounds per minute, boasted a range of eight miles. Their purpose was to deter minesweepers and swift boats from attempting to navigate the treacherous minefields. During World War II, Battery Crosby became part of the “Mine Groupment”. This group concentrated its firepower on the harbor entrance and the minefields, a strategic point of vulnerability. The Sixth Coast Artillery Regiment, Battery “B”, manned Battery Crosby throughout this period. However, as the war progressed, the focus shifted towards air defense. The threat of Japanese submarines diminished. As a result, in 1943, the War Department officially decommissioned Battery Crosby, and its once-powerful guns were scrapped. Battery Crosby stands as a testament to Lieutenant Franklin B. Crosby. He served in the Fourth Artillery and tragically lost his life at the Civil War Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, in May 1863. Though the guns are gone, the sturdy structure remains. It offers a glimpse into a critical chapter in San Francisco’s defense history. Preservation efforts are underway to stabilize Battery Crosby. The encroaching vegetation has been cleared, revealing the stark beauty of this historic site. While the interior magazines remain closed to the public, the exterior of Battery Crosby and the stunning views it offers are well worth a visit.
