Perhaps you might think Battersea Railway Bridge is just another railway bridge. But it is more interesting than you might expect. This bridge has several unusual features.
Battersea Railway Bridge crosses the River Thames. It links Battersea and Fulham. It is part of the West London Line. The London Overground uses it from Clapham Junction to Willesden Junction. Dating back to 1863, it is one of London’s oldest Thames crossings.
Originally called Cremorne Bridge it was named after the Cremorne Gardens. These gardens were near the Chelsea end of the bridge. The name Cremorne comes from a barony in County Monaghan in Ireland.
The bridge provided a crucial link. It connected northbound lines from Paddington and Euston. It also linked southbound lines from Waterloo, Victoria and Clapham Junction. This connection was via the West London Extension Railway.
William Baker designed the Battersea Railway Bridge. He was the chief engineer for the London and North Western Railway. The bridge opened on March 2 1863. It cost £87,000 to build. That is equivalent to over £10 million today.
The Battersea Railway Bridge has five 120-foot lattice girder arches. These arches sit on stone piers. A three-arch brick viaduct carries the line on the north side. One arch now provides a pedestrian route. This is part of the Thames Path. On the south side are four arches. Residents of a houseboat community use two for storage.

During the Second World War, the bridge was a target for German bombs. It transported armaments. These armaments were manufactured in the north. They went to ports on the south coast via the bridge.
The Battersea Railway Bridge is also unique. It does not cross the river at right angles. It is also the narrowest bridge to cross the Thames. This includes all railway, underground, and road bridges. The bridge has never been rebuilt since 1863. It is one of the oldest bridges crossing the Thames in Inner London.
The bridge has been strengthened and refurbished several times. This occurred in 1969 and again in 1992. In 2003, a refuse barge struck the bridge during high tide. This damaged some lower structural elements. Repairs were completed in early 2004.
Trains crossing the Battersea Railway Bridge have a speed limit. Locomotive-hauled traffic is restricted to 20 mph. All other traffic is limited to 30 mph.
In 2008, the bridge became a Grade II* listed structure. This protects its special character. It is one of the earliest railway bridges to cross the Thames.
In November 2013, permission was granted for the Diamond Jubilee Footbridge. This extends from the two central piers of the bridge.
