Built in a modern style, the Bâtiment ℏ (625) de l’université Paris-Saclay stands as a testament to scientific pursuit. It houses the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Sciences of Orsay. This building, also known as Bâtiment hbar or H-bar, is a landmark within the Paris-Saclay University. Its unique architecture, designed by Dominique Lyon, features a rectangular base rising diagonally over the top four levels. This design offers stunning views of the wooded castle to the south and Place Hubert Coudane to the north. The Bâtiment ℏ (625) de l’université Paris-Saclay was inaugurated in December 2019, along with the Place Hubert Coudane. The building’s name, ℏ (pronounced H-bar), is a direct reference to the Planck constant, a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics. Inside, you’ll find a hub for physics students, with a capacity of about 1,000 students from L3, M1, and M2 levels. The Bâtiment ℏ (625) de l’université Paris-Saclay is more than just classrooms. It boasts modern teaching spaces, cutting-edge experimental platforms, and even an astronomical observation dome on its roof. The building’s base houses shared teaching areas on two floors. The main amphitheaters are accessed through the north-south hallway. The ground floor features an auditorium and cafeteria. The upper four levels are dedicated to the four disciplines of the Physics Department, each with its own common area and views of the surrounding area. Practical work rooms are accessible via a wide corridor that crosses the building and leads out to the nearby forest. This building is part of the Center for Physics Matter and Radiation (CPMR), which includes five physics laboratories and the Institut Pascal, facilitating international research exchanges. Just outside the Bâtiment ℏ (625) de l’université Paris-Saclay, you’ll find Place Hubert Coudane, a major public space. This square, formerly known as Place du Lieu de Vie, features sandstone paving and the preserved remains of a Gallo-Roman villa.
