Have you ever heard of a university where classes are held in a building so close to nature that it seems as if it’s been built inside a forest? The Bâtiment Bois de l’Étang is exactly that. Right here, on the eastern edge of the Cité Descartes, stands this unique structure, named after the nearby pond that reflects the surrounding trees. It’s a masterpiece of design, built by architect Jean-Charles Bauve, with its first phase completed in 1995. The unique architecture of the university building, built on an elongated piece of land, is truly special. It’s a blend of wood and concrete, connected by covered walkways on the top level. The building’s northern facade is clad in wood, forming a prow-like overhang over concrete piers. The southern side is made of raw concrete. The building is home to the university’s economics, humanities, and city sciences programs. The Bâtiment Bois De l’Étang is a testament to the creativity of architects and the beauty of blending modern design with the natural environment.
