The Paris Observatory a renowned astronomical center and one of the world’s oldest still operating observatories. It opened in 1667 during King Louis XIV’s reign. The observatory’s initial goal was to improve France’s maritime power. The building itself was a masterpiece of architecture designed by Claude Perrault brother of Charles Perrault.
Bâtiment 10 housed a one-meter diameter photographic telescope. Built in 1891 it was exceptionally luminous. This was unlike other telescopes of the time. Its short focal length of only three meters allowed it to photograph nebulae star clusters and comets with remarkable clarity. The telescope was designed to be portable. It was a marvel of engineering. However it never left the observatory.
