Anna Bathy. A name that echoes through the grand halls of the Magyar Állami Operaház, the Hungarian State Opera House. Right here, at this very spot, marked by this simple stone plaque, Anna Bathy, or Szaszovszky Ottóné as she was known in private life, resided from 1938 until her death in 1962. The inscription tells us she was a lifetime member of the Opera, and an unforgettable interpreter of Bartók and Kodály. Bathy’s life was a symphony of passion, talent, and dedication. Born Anette Katalin Stampf in Beregszász, Austria-Hungary, in 1901, her journey to operatic stardom wasn’t straightforward. Her father, a prominent judge, initially opposed her artistic aspirations. But young Anna’s talent, discovered by a former opera singer, was undeniable. She pursued her dreams, studying under Maleczki Bianka at the prestigious Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. Bathy made her operatic debut in 1929 at the Hungarian State Opera House as Amelia in Verdi’s “A Masked Ball.” Her performance captivated audiences, and she quickly became a leading soprano. Her repertoire spanned Verdi, Wagner, Mozart, and she championed Hungarian composers like Bartók and Kodály. She graced stages internationally, from Vienna and Barcelona to Hamburg and Paris. This plaque, simple yet evocative, is more than just a marker of a residence. It is a testament to a woman who dedicated her life to music. It commemorates a powerful voice that continues to resonate within the walls of the Opera House and in the hearts of those who remember her artistry. Anna Bathy, a true Hungarian treasure.
