What if nature held the key to healing? Bastyr University, nestled amid the serene forests and athletic fields near Lake Washington, whispers this very question. Bastyr University’s story began in Seattle in 1978 as the John Bastyr College of Naturopathic Medicine. Founded by Sheila Quinn, Joseph Pizzorno, Les Griffith, and Bill Mitchell, they honored John Bastyr, a local naturopathic physician and teacher. Originally located in Seattle, Bastyr University moved to its current Kenmore location, the former St. Edward Seminary, in 1996. The university later purchased the property in 2005. The campus itself is a blend of old and new. The original seminary building, dating back to the 1950s, stands alongside modern student housing built to LEED platinum specifications. The campus chapel, known for its stunning acoustics, has hosted recording sessions for films like “Brokeback Mountain” and “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” and even video game soundtracks. Bastyr University isn’t just about tranquil surroundings. It’s a hub of learning, offering programs in naturopathy, acupuncture, Traditional Asian medicine, nutrition, and more. In 2010, Bastyr merged with the Seattle Midwifery School, expanding its reach and influence. Bastyr University’s journey has been one of growth and evolution. From a college focused on naturopathic medicine, it blossomed into a university offering a wide range of programs. This institution stands as a testament to the belief in nature’s healing power, a philosophy woven into the very fabric of its being. The legacy of John Bastyr lives on, not just in name, but in the university’s commitment to exploring the intersection of nature and healing.
