How many stories could these stones tell? We are standing before the Bastide du Vallon Giraudy. It is a hidden gem in Marseille.

The Bastide du Vallon Giraudy is also known as Château Foucou. It sits in the 14th arrondissement of Marseille. This location places it in the Saint-Joseph area. It is beyond the urban sprawl of Marseille. The bastide is at the southwest tip of the Étoile mountains. It nestles between the Vallon de la Mûre and Vallon Dol.

Access to this tranquil site is via Chemin des Bessons or Traverse de la Tour-Sainte. The Bastide du Vallon Giraudy offers a journey back in time.

Construction of what was then called Château Foucou began in the late 17th or early 18th century. In 1819 modifications included a cistern and a rural building. Mid-19th century Louis Joseph Giraudy acquired the property. He saw the potential of the site when the Canal de Marseille was planned. The canal bordered the land increasing its value and utility.

Giraudy transformed the château into a bastide. A bastide is a country house. He added a garden. It was a beautiful space for relaxation. Thus, the area became known as Vallon Giraudy. The Bastide du Vallon Giraudy tells a story of family. Valérie Lefert is the owner of the Bastide du Vallon Giraudy. She said that Giraudy had a large family and many servants. He decided to expand the house because of this.

The Bastide du Vallon Giraudy is more than an old building. It represents Marseille’s rich architectural heritage. Its architecture and park are protected. In 1995 the French Ministry of Culture designated it as a historical monument. This designation protects it for future generations.

Today, the Bastide du Vallon Giraudy is a reminder of Marseille’s past. It invites us to imagine life centuries ago. It links the past with the present. The Bastide du Vallon Giraudy stands as a testament to time. Its walls echo stories of families and architectural evolution.
