Why did the Basler Tor in Karlsruhe earn the nickname “Red Tower”? Let’s unravel this intriguing tale right here, before this last surviving gate of Durlach’s old city walls. The Basler Tor, likely dating back to the 14th century, stands as a testament to a rich and layered past. It guarded the southern approach to the city and derived its name from the road leading to Basel, Switzerland, where the Margraves had a secondary residence. The Basler Tor witnessed dramatic events throughout history. In 1689, a devastating fire ravaged the tower, leading to its reconstruction. Interestingly, the sturdy structure then served time as a prison. A cell door, complete with an iron peephole cover, still exists as a chilling reminder of this era. Fast forward to the 1960s, a period of social and political upheaval. The Basler Tor became a hub for a self-managed youth center. These politically active youths, embracing anti-authoritarian and revolutionary ideals, painted the tower’s interior with slogans and symbols, giving it the nickname “Red Tower.” They demanded more democracy during the student revolts of 1968/1969. The city eventually evicted the group and reclaimed the tower. However, the “Red Tower” legacy lived on. Its walls remained adorned with the graffiti until 1992, when they were whitewashed, essentially erasing this chapter of the tower’s story. Today, the Basler Tor has taken on a new life. Since 2017, a medieval group called “Die Jörg von Nördlingen – Ritterschaft Durlach” leases the tower. They have meticulously restored the interior to reflect a medieval setting around 1470. This allows visitors to glimpse into the past. So, as you stand before the Basler Tor, remember its many faces: medieval gate, prison, symbol of youth rebellion, and finally, a window into the Middle Ages. Its stones whisper tales of resilience, change, and the enduring spirit of those who have passed through its archway.
