Who knew that a basketball complex could rise from the grounds of a demolished arena? We are standing before the Basketbol Gelişim Merkezi. It is a testament to Turkey’s passion for basketball.

The Basketbol Gelişim Merkezi is more than just a sports venue. It embodies the future of Turkish basketball. This modern complex officially opened on September 29 2024. However its story began long before that day.

The complex was built on the site of the Abdi İpekçi Arena. The Abdi İpekçi Arena was a multi-sport venue that served Istanbul well. Opened in 1989 it faced the ravages of time. It could no longer meet expectations and was at risk of earthquake damage. The old arena was closed in 2017 and demolished in 2018.

The project for the Basketbol Gelişim Merkezi was finalized in October 2021. Construction began in 2022. The Turkish Basketball Federation oversaw the transformation. The TOKİ or Mass Housing Administration also helped.

The Turkish Basketball Federation moved its headquarters here on September 9 2024. Before the official opening a weekend tournament was held. Around 800 boys and girls played six matches simultaneously. These players were in the U10 and U11 categories.

The Basketbol Gelişim Merkezi covers a vast area. It occupies 68800 square meters of land. The complex includes seven blocks. A significant portion is dedicated to green space. Around 14000 square meters is a green area.

Inside, you will find a main court. It boasts a seating capacity of 10000. There is also a training hall for national teams. This hall seats 1000 spectators. Three additional halls each accommodate 500 people. A 3×3 basketball half-court provides even more space.

The Basketbol Gelişim Merkezi provides comprehensive facilities. There are camping facilities for teams, a fitness center, and a cardio hall. You can also find a hotel, event areas, and food and beverage options. A basketball library and museum enrich the experience. The complex even houses a basketball high school.

The Basketbol Gelişim Merkezi uses solar panels. This reflects a commitment to sustainable energy. There is a large parking lot. It can accommodate 417 cars and 25 buses.

This is home to Turkey’s national basketball teams. Men’s, women’s, junior, and youth teams all train here. Professional clubs like Anadolu Efes and Galatasaray also use the facility.

The first major event was the 37th Men’s Basketball President’s Cup. Fenerbahçe Beko played Anadolu Efes on opening day. The 2024 FIBA Europe SuperCup Women match was held here too. Fenerbahçe played Beşiktaş in that game. EuroBasket Women 2025 and EuroBasket 2025 qualification matches have also taken place here.

The İstanbul TBF Basketball Sport High School is within the complex. It was established on September 20 2024. The high school can accommodate 200 students. It provides eight classrooms.

The Basketbol Gelişim Merkezi stands as a beacon. It shows Turkey’s commitment to basketball. It nurtures talent, hosts major events, and inspires future generations. It is a place where dreams take flight. It is a symbol of Turkish basketball’s bright future.
