Across the bustling avenue, the Basilique Notre-Dame de Boulogne stands as a testament to faith and royal decree. It’s hard to believe this grand structure, with its intricate Gothic architecture, began as a promise. A promise made by King Philip IV of France, inspired by a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary that arrived in Boulogne-sur-Mer in a boat with no crew. King Philip, deeply moved, vowed to build a replica near Paris to facilitate pilgrimages closer to home. Unfortunately, he died before his vision could be realized. His son, Philip V, inherited the task and laid the first stone of the Basilique Notre-Dame de Boulogne in 1319. The location chosen was the small village of Menus-les-Saint-Cloud, where the Seine stretched out, almost mimicking a sea inlet, reminiscent of Boulogne-sur-Mer. The Basilique Notre-Dame de Boulogne quickly became a pilgrimage site, leading to the rapid growth of the village. Its architecture consciously echoed its older sister on the coast. Interestingly, the original church in Boulogne-sur-Mer no longer exists, having been replaced by a larger basilica between 1827 and 1866. The Basilique Notre-Dame de Boulogne, however, has endured, though not without its trials. The French Revolution ravaged the church, looting its treasures and damaging its structure. Centuries later, Napoleon III, aiming to restore the legacy of the monarchy, commissioned its renovation. In 1860, the architect Eugène Millet, a student of the renowned Viollet-le-Duc, began restoring the basilica. Millet chose to emphasize the 14th-century Gothic style, creating a building that speaks to both its history and its resilience. In 2024, an incredible honor was bestowed upon Basilique Notre-Dame de Boulogne. Pope Francis declared it a minor basilica, officially recognizing its significance within the Catholic Church. This historic moment, officially proclaimed in January 2025, cements the basilica’s place not only as a local treasure, but as a site of international religious importance.
