Hidden beneath the modern cityscape lies a treasure. The Basilique funéraire Saint-Laurent de Choulans whispers tales of Lyon’s rich past. This isn’t just any church. It’s a fascinating archaeological site a glimpse into early Christian Lyon.

Imagine a time long ago. The 5th century. The Basilique funéraire Saint-Laurent de Choulans was built then. It was a grand structure a testament to faith. Its single nave transept and large apse were impressive for the time. Later additions included side aisles and annexes expanding its reach and purpose. A portico was added on the west side around the 7th century. A porch to the north was built sometime between the 8th and 9th centuries.

This wasn’t just a place of worship. The Basilique funéraire Saint-Laurent de Choulans was also a burial ground. A Christian necropolis surrounded the church. It flourished from the 7th to the 8th centuries. Over eighty sarcophages were found. Fifteen inscriptions provided invaluable clues about the people laid to rest there. The weighty marble slabs covering these tombs even formed the church’s flooring. They contained small alcoves. Epitaphs were placed inside these alcoves. These provided clues about the identity of this church.

The Basilica’s story continues. In the Carolingian era the original building was replaced with a church. That too was replaced in the 10th century by a chapel. This chapel sadly disappeared by the 18th century. It’s absent from an 1835 lithograph showing the Gadagne Hospital’s facade.

The Basilique funéraire Saint-Laurent de Choulans wasn’t always visible. Its discovery in 1947 was accidental. It was unearthed during the installation of a telephone line. Excavations followed. Researchers uncovered its secrets. The site remained covered for a time then the area underwent significant development. More excavations took place between 1976 and 1983 and again in 1985.

Today the northern portion of the Basilique funéraire Saint-Laurent de Choulans remains. It’s integrated into a modern building. Visitors can view the ruins through large glass windows. A mural provides a vivid reconstruction of the basilica. It depicts the structure based on the excavated remains. This remarkable site is open to the public limited times including the Journées du Patrimoine. The Basilique funéraire Saint-Laurent de Choulans invites us to connect with Lyon’s ancient past.
