How did a simple Christmas Day sermon in 1903 transform Minneapolis? It sparked the creation of the Basilica of Saint Mary. Standing before this magnificent structure you can almost feel the energy of that moment. Archbishop John Ireland envisioned a grand church a landmark for the city. He wanted a building that would inspire awe. He chose Emmanuel Louis Masqueray a renowned architect. Masqueray designed the Basilica in the Beaux-Arts style. It’s a blend of Renaissance and Baroque influences. He aimed for perfect proportions. He wanted good lighting. His vision was a space of sincere composition. The result is breathtaking. The Basilica’s foundation is Rockville granite. Its walls are white Vermont granite reaching 70 feet high. Two 116-foot spires flank the main entrance a colonnaded portico. Inside five large arched stained-glass windows flood the nave with light. The nave’s barrel vault is 82 feet a feat surpassing even St. Peter’s Basilica. The sanctuary features a grand dome rising 138 feet. Atop the dome sits a lantern topped with a bronze cross extending the total height to 200 feet. Beneath the dome lies a marble altar under a 50-foot-high marble-columned baldachin. This incredible Basilica wasn’t finished overnight. Construction lasted for years. World War I interrupted progress. Masqueray tragically passed away in 1917. Yet the work continued. In 1926 Pope Pius XI designated it a minor basilica a first for the United States. The Basilica of Saint Mary continued to evolve. In 1941 it was solemnly consecrated during the Ninth National Eucharistic Congress. The Basilica has faced challenges. In 2020 minor fire damage occurred during civil unrest. Despite setbacks the Basilica stands tall. It remains a beacon of faith and a testament to architectural brilliance. It serves as the co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Today the Basilica hosts various events including the annual Basilica Block Party a vibrant music festival. It’s a place where history faith and community converge. It is a testament to the enduring power of vision and perseverance. A true landmark of Minneapolis the Basilica of Saint Mary welcomes you to marvel at its beauty.
