Considered the Patroness of Argentina Paraguay and Uruguay the Basílica Nuestra Señora de Luján stands as a testament to faith. Its history dates back centuries. The Basílica Nuestra Señora de Luján is more than a church. It embodies Argentina’s spiritual heart.

The story of the Basílica Nuestra Señora de Luján begins in 1630. A farmer from Portugal desired a shrine to Our Lady. He requested a statue from Brazil. Two statues arrived one of Our Lady holding the Child Jesus and another of the Immaculate Conception. As the statues were transported one cart refused to move. Only when the statue of the Immaculate Conception was removed did the cart proceed.

This event was seen as a sign. The statue of the Immaculate Conception was enshrined. It became known as Our Lady of Luján. An African slave boy named Manuel became its caretaker. He devoted his life to the Virgin and to serving others.

Initially the statue resided at Don Rosendo’s Ranch. Attempts to move it to a new chapel failed. The statue mysteriously returned to the ranch each time. This reaffirmed its chosen location. The shrine grew in popularity attracting countless pilgrims.

In 1887 construction began on the current basilica. It took nearly fifty years to complete. The Basílica Nuestra Señora de Luján was completed in 1935. The architecture is Neogothic. It mirrors great Spanish cathedrals.

The two main towers reach 106 meters high. Stained glass windows illuminate the interior. The statue of the Virgin is small. It is only 38 cm tall. It features a gold crown adorned with hundreds of precious stones.

In 1930 Pope Pius XII gave the sanctuary the title of Basilica. In 1998 it was declared a National and Historical Monument. The Basílica Nuestra Señora de Luján continues to be a major pilgrimage site. Approximately six million people visit each year.

The Peregrinación de los Gauchos occurs in September. The Peregrinación de los Jóvenes takes place in October. Youths walk 68 kilometers from Buenos Aires. These pilgrimages demonstrate faith.

General San Martin laid his sword in the cathedral. This act honored Our Lady of Luján. The Argentine Army also chose her as their patroness. A regiment is dedicated to her services. Its members call her La generala del Lujan.

Several Popes have honored Our Lady of Luján. John Paul II visited in 1982 during the Falklands War. He bestowed the Golden Rose upon her. The Golden Rose is a gift from the Pope.

The Basílica Nuestra Señora de Luján stands as a symbol of faith. It represents hope. It embodies Argentina’s rich religious history. Its doors are open to all.

The Basílica Nuestra Señora de Luján is not just a building. It is a living testament to devotion. It is a place of miracles. It is the heart of Argentina.
