Gargoyles guarding the Basilica del Voto Nacional o del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús aren’t your typical winged monsters. They’re iguanas, tortoises, and armadillos. These unique grotesques are just one of the many details that make this basilica special. Here in the heart of Quito, the Basilica del Voto Nacional stands as a testament to Ecuadorian faith and artistry. Construction began in 1887, fueled by a national vow to consecrate Ecuador to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Basilica del Voto Nacional is the largest Neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas. Its towering grey spires reach towards the heavens. The basilica is a landmark in Quito’s historic center. This area became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978. The basilica’s design, a blend of European Neo-Gothic and Ecuadorian elements, was the brainchild of French architect Emilio Tarlier. He drew inspiration from the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, but incorporated local flora and fauna into the design.

The basilica’s construction was a national endeavor, funded initially by 12,000 pesos allocated by the Ecuadorian congress in 1884. That’s equivalent to a mere five US cents today. When that proved insufficient, donations of stones were accepted. The names of the donors were promised to be carved into the stones. A salt tax was even introduced to generate additional funds. The church is technically unfinished. Legend says that upon its completion, the world will end.

The Basilica del Voto Nacional houses 24 chapels, each representing a province of Ecuador. This reflects the original intention to unify the country under the banner of Catholicism. Inside, stained glass windows depict biblical scenes, framed by Ecuadorian flora. Look closely at the ribets. They feature designs inspired by indigenous Ecuadorian clothing. The rose windows are not typical geometric patterns, but rather showcase lilies and orchids, symbols of Quito and Ecuador.

For a small fee, you can ascend the towers and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Quito. The climb is worth the effort. From the top, you can spot El Panecillo, Quito’s own version of Christ the Redeemer, nestled between the clock towers. The surrounding mountains frame the sprawling city. It’s a sight you won’t soon forget. The Basilica del Voto Nacional is more than just a church. It’s a symbol of Ecuadorian history, faith, and architectural ingenuity. A visit to Quito is incomplete without experiencing the grandeur of this magnificent basilica.
