Imagine a young Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He is now Pope Francis. He walked through these doors seeking guidance. This is the Basílica de San José de Flores. It stands as a testament to faith and history. The Basílica de San José de Flores is more than just a church. It is a cultural landmark in the Flores neighborhood. It faces the bustling Plaza Pueyrredón. The basilica has witnessed countless historical events.

Back in 1803, Bishop Benito Lué y Riega decided to create a new parish. Ramón Francisco Flores’ family donated land for the church. They also donated land for a plaza and public slaughterhouses. In 1806, the parish of San José de Flores was officially established.

The first church was a humble structure. It was made of adobe, wood, and straw. Father Miguel García collected funds for a permanent temple. Ramón Francisco Flores donated twelve thousand bricks. Construction began in 1810. It faced many funding delays. Work stopped and started over several years. The church remained unfinished for decades.

In 1823, the government planned to build a new parish church. However, the project never materialized. Then, in 1830, Dr. Martín Boneo took charge. He was a friend of Juan Manuel de Rosas. Boneo focused on building a new church. He also wanted to move the cemetery. He gained support from the community. Governor Juan Manuel de Rosas became a major benefactor. Society members donated money, bricks, and furniture. Engineer Felipe Senillosa designed the church for free. The church opened on December 11, 1831. It was celebrated with week-long festivities.

By 1878, Father Feliciano de Vita wanted a bigger church. The original church was too small. It did not match the grand residences nearby. Wealthy families contributed to the project. The foundation stone was laid in 1879. Architects Benito Panunzi and Emilio Lombardo finalized the plans. Andrés Simonazzi and Tomás Allegrini managed the construction.

After three years, the new Iglesia de San José de Flores opened in 1883. Bishop Federico Aneiros blessed it. Governor Juan José Dardo Rocha and Felisa Dorrego de Miró were the godparents.

Pope Pius X designated it a minor basilica in 1912. Archbishop Mariano Antonio Espinosa made it official. Father Daniel Figueroa decorated the basilica. That year, the remains of Santa Columba arrived from Italy. They were a gift from Bishop Antonio Sardi. In 1916, the basilica was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In 1956, the image of San José received a pontifical coronation. Pope Pius XII gave this honor. The Camarín de San José and the Baptistery also opened.

Between 1996 and 1997, Ukrainian artists created three paintings. There was also a general restoration. From 2014 to 2015, the city government sponsored a complete interior restoration. The restoration included the paintings and the dome.

The Basílica de San José de Flores holds a special place in Pope Francis’s story. He felt his calling here after confessing. This humble act led him to join the seminary. The confessional is now a site for tours about his life.

The Basílica de San José de Flores continues to inspire. It welcomes all to experience its rich history. Its doors remain open. They invite reflection and connection to something greater than ourselves.
