Hidden within the historic Monserrat neighborhood stands the Basílica de San Francisco a testament to Buenos Aires’ rich past. Its foundations trace back to 1580 when the Franciscan order received land from Juan de Garay. This marked the colony’s first land grant. The Basilica shares its courtyard with the Chapel of San Roque. Together they form the San Francisco Monumental Complex a National Historic Monument.

The Basilica’s current grandeur is the result of a long and fascinating journey. Construction of the definitive sanctuary began around 1731 under the direction of Jesuit architect Andrés Blanqui and Sevillian friar Vicente Muñoz. The church’s official opening was on March 25 1754. A significant fissure unfortunately forced its temporary closure around 1770. It was finally consecrated on September 28 1783.

The Basilica’s stunning Bavarian Baroque façade a creation of architect Ernesto Sackmann dates from 1907 to 1911. Artist Antonio Voegele added the iconic sculptures in 1910. These depict Saint Francis Dante Alighieri Giotto and Christopher Columbus all connected to San Francisco’s minor orders. This makes the façade even more special. The Basilica’s interior is equally captivating. A unique central nave extends with shallow side chapels. The original altar remains in the right transept. Sadly the main altar was destroyed by fire in 1955.

A highlight of the Basilica is its 18th-century Rococo pulpit. Crafted by Isidro Lorea it’s a masterpiece of carved gilded wood. The church’s dome rises gracefully from an octagonal base. The harmonious sounds of a 1772 German organ by Luis Oben still resonate within these hallowed walls. The Basilica’s history isn’t just in its stones. It witnessed pivotal moments in Argentine history. A time capsule was even discovered inside the Dante statue during restoration work in 2007. It contained a letter from Voegele himself detailing the sculpture’s creation and the Basilica’s renovation.

This isn’t just a building. The Basílica de San Francisco is a living archive of faith art and history. It whispers tales of colonial beginnings architectural marvels and the enduring spirit of Buenos Aires. Take your time exploring its many treasures. They have stories waiting to be discovered.
