The imposing stone arches of the Basílica Católica de San Pedro de Conocoto stand before you. Feel the weight of history here.

This magnificent basilica in Conocoto is more than just a church. It’s a testament to community faith and resilience. Originally a simple structure with a thatch roof Conocoto’s church was elevated to parish status in 1725.

The current basilica however tells a different story. In the early 20th century Father Pedro Huberto Brünning a German Lazarist priest oversaw its construction. This wasn’t a solo project. The community rallied together. Their financial contributions and hard work were vital. The resulting basilica is a beautiful example of collaborative building.

The basilica’s portico is a stunning sight. A grand stone arch crowned by a balustrade rests on massive stone columns. Two tall towers flank it. The left tower proudly displays clocks added in 1970 one on each face. The pyramidal shape of the spires is characteristic of Father Brünning’s other church designs. This is a detail that reveals the architect’s unique style.

Inside three naves are divided by arches supported by heavy stone columns. The vaults are made of pumice stone. Intricate murals decorate the arches and walls. The entire structure is brick-built reinforced by buttresses and adorned with elegant rosettes. The pumice stone is a detail that many visitors may not immediately notice. It adds to the overall beauty and strength of the building.

On May 1 1948 Cardinal María de la Torre consecrated the basilica to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This event marked a significant moment in the history of Conocoto.
