Archaeological finds tell us that Başakşehir was inhabited in prehistoric times. The Yarımburgaz Cave holds some of the earliest traces of human life in Istanbul. Imagine people living here between 400,000 and 600,000 BC.
Throughout history, Başakşehir has been strategically important. It sits along the Via Egnatia. This was a vital route for the Byzantine Empire. Armies marched through here on their way to Istanbul. The construction of railways in the 19th century brought changes. The Yedikule-Küçükçekmece Line increased activity around Ispartakule Railway Station. During the Balkan Wars, the railway became crucial for troop movements and refugee care. Temporary hospitals were set up to treat the wounded.
After the Balkan Wars, Muslim refugees settled in Başakşehir. They came from regions invaded by enemies. Crimean Tatars also migrated here after the Crimean War. They received land from the government.
During World War I, British forces raided villages. They searched for weapons, creating fear. The area was once called Azatlık. It supplied gunpowder to the Ottoman army. Later, it became a farm known as Resneli Çiftliği. This honored Resneli Niyazi, a hero of the Young Turk Revolution.
After the Republic of Turkey was established, Başakşehir was part of Bakırköy district. In 2008, it officially became a municipality. The rural areas joined the municipality in 2013.
Bahçeşehir is a well-known part of Başakşehir. It was developed as a gated community in 1987. The area focused on green spaces. It included villas and apartments. Bahçeşehir received awards for its sustainable design.
Today, Başakşehir is a growing district. In 2022, its population was 514,900. It boasts solid ground, which is good for earthquake safety. Başakşehir Millet Bahçesi is a large green space for recreation.
