Bartha Contemporary was founded in January 2000. Niklas and Daniela von Bartha were the founders. They are a Swiss-German couple with a shared passion. Their gallery focuses on non-figurative and conceptual art.
Niklas grew up in Basel Switzerland. His family had a rich tradition in the art world. Daniela is German. They met at Christie’s Education in London. Both gained experience working with art galleries and auction houses. This inspired them to create their own space.
Initially, Bartha Contemporary operated from a small basement. Despite its size, the gallery attracted a loyal following. The carefully selected program showcased diverse art forms. Soon the gallery outgrew its original location.
In March 2003, Bartha Contemporary moved to Lancaster Road in Notting Hill. The new location was above Alistair Little restaurant. It was on the first floor and boasted an infamous bullet hole above the entrance door.
Over the years, the gallery expanded. It participated in international art fairs. These fairs were in New York Chicago Houston Cologne and Düsseldorf. They also went to Basel Geneva Amsterdam Maastricht and Uruguay. This connected Bartha Contemporary with a broader audience. It cemented its reputation for abstract and conceptual art.
In 2012, Bartha Contemporary relocated to Margaret Street in Fitzrovia. This street-level space increased visibility. It allowed the gallery to reach a bigger audience. The gallery hosted collaborations with other dealers. Artists were invited to create site-specific installations.
Bartha Contemporary changed direction in 2019. It established a private space on Bury Street in London St. James. This exclusive venue was accessible by appointment only. It provided a discreet platform for contemporary culture. This allowed for a more intimate engagement with art.
In 2021, the gallery came full circle. It relocated to Ledbury Mews North in Notting Hill. The space was a former photography studio. It features an impressive infinity curve on its far wall. Ledbury Mews offers a residential ambiance. It invites a sense of tranquility within a relaxed setting.
