Full all-day service didn’t arrive until July 7 1980. Why the delay? The Transbay Tube needed upgrades. Think of the engineering challenges. Constructing a tunnel under the bay. A project of monumental scale.
The Red Line’s reach expanded over time. On June 22 2003 the SFO Millbrae extension opened. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Initially the extension only ran during weekday peak hours. Why? Funding was a challenge. San Mateo County wasn’t part of the BART district. SamTrans stepped in providing crucial funding.
Lower-than-expected ridership created problems. SamTrans had to cover losses. They asked BART to run only the Blue Line south of Daly City. This was a temporary fix. In 2007 SamTrans and BART reached an agreement. SamTrans gave BART control of the SFO Millbrae extension. BART received extra funds in return.
The Red Line faced challenges. Power cable breaks near Berkeley and Richmond caused service disruptions. Imagine the chaos. Commuters scrambling for alternative transport. But the resilience of the BART system shone through. Services resumed after temporary shutdowns.
