Around 1828 a pumping station was built near the Barrow Hill reservoir. This wasn’t just any pumping station. It was crucial for supplying water to the burgeoning Camden Town. London’s water supply back then came from the Thames. But as the city grew so did pollution. The Barrow Hill pumping station became essential in bringing cleaner water further upstream.

The Barrow Hill reservoir itself was quite a sight. It was almost rectangular. Measuring 95 meters by 57 meters at its widest point. Its brick lining was meticulously crafted. The reservoir held a staggering 4 750 000 gallons of water. Imagine the sheer scale of this structure. It was initially open to the sky. Later a roof of brick barrel vaults was added.

In 1834 Thomas Telford a renowned civil engineer proposed a grand scheme. He envisioned aqueducts bringing water from the River Verulam to Barrow Hill. This ambitious project would have revolutionised London’s water supply. Unfortunately Telford died shortly after. His plans were never fully implemented.

Sadly the original Barrow Hill pumping station was demolished around 1950. Its replacement was a more modern structure. The reservoir however continued to serve Londoners for many years. But eventually problems arose. The brick lining and columns showed signs of movement. Despite repairs the reservoir was taken out of service in 2002.

The story doesn’t end there. In 2015 a brand new reservoir was built on the same site. This state-of-the-art reservoir boasts a grassed roof. It’s a testament to London’s ongoing efforts to maintain its water supply. The new Barrow Hill reservoir is a vital part of the Thames Water Ring Main. It ensures the resilience of water supply to 280 000 residents. The Barrow Hill pumping station’s legacy continues. It’s a vital part of London’s water infrastructure. A story of innovation adaptation and the ongoing need for clean water in a growing city.
