Barros Filho is a lower-class neighborhood. It sits in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone. It is named for Antònio da Costa Barros’s son. He gave land for a railway. The railway construction finished in 1908.

Antònio da Costa Barros owned Fazenda Boa Esperança. This farm became Barros Filho. It also became Costa Barros. Parts of Guadalupe and Honório Gurgel are here too. He donated land from his farm. This helped build the railway. The railway shaped the area.

Barros Filho sits by Avenida Brasil. Estrada João Paulo is its main road. It links the area to Madureira and Pavuna.

In 2000, Barros Filho had an interesting statistic. Its Human Development Index was 0.750. It ranked 114th out of 126 areas in Rio.

Once, the area was part of Irajá. Large farms dominated it. Fazenda Botafogo and Engenho Boa Esperança were here. The Costa Barros family owned these farms. Antònio Costa Barros passed the land to his son.

Between 1892 and 1898, an auxiliary railway line was built. In 1908, the Barros Filho Station opened. It gave the neighborhood its name. Avenida Brasil crosses Barros Filho. The Fazenda Botafogo Industrial District is here. Several communities also call it home.

Barros Filho borders Costa Barros. It also borders Guadalupe, Coelho Neto, and Honório Gurgel. Estrada João Paulo connects it to other areas.

Several schools serve Barros Filho. These include Escola Municipal Sindicalista Chico Mendes. Escola Municipal Juracy Silveira is also here. So is Centro de Educação Infantil Fonteducart. The SESI offers industrial courses. Universidade Castelo Branco is nearby. It is located in Shopping Jardim Guadalupe.

The SESI provides leisure facilities. There is an Olympic pool and a gym. Residents enjoy activities for health. Shopping Jardim Guadalupe is five minutes away. In 2013, the city planned to expand Parque Madureira. It would reach Barros Filho. This would improve residents’ quality of life.

In 1958, Armcostaco opened a factory. It made steel products for sanitation. It also served road construction and mining. Panamericana, a chemical company, also opened.

Othon Almeida Square is interesting. It features small shops. Line 362 ends here. A Honório Gurgel bust stands here. This area is actually part of Barros Filho. Many locals think they live in Honório Gurgel.

Beco do Chiqueiro is a curious passage. It connects Rua João Pessoa and Rua Joana D’Arc. Once, pigs were raised here. This remains from the time the area was a farm.
