How did a swamp transform into a vibrant community? Welcome to Barrio Juan José Nágera. This isn’t just any neighborhood in Buenos Aires. It’s a testament to planning and resilience. Originally a vast swamp its transformation began in the 1960s. Architects Ros O’Tool Sívori and Islas designed a remarkable housing project. They created 1302 units across 14 buildings. A church a secondary school and a daycare center were also included.
Construction started in March 1962. It finished in December 1969. The first residents were those displaced by the construction of the Dellepiane Autopista. Imagine the upheaval the uncertainty. These families didn’t even get to choose their apartments. They bought a plot of land. Then a lottery determined their building their apartment’s position.
Barrio Nágera wasn’t always named this. It was initially called Barrio Parque Almirante Brown Sector C. Later it was renamed to honor Juan José Nágera. He was a pioneering geologist significant for his contributions to Argentina’s claim over its continental shelf.
The area is unique. It boasts extensive gardens and green spaces. These make it one of the city’s major green lungs alongside the Parque Indoamericano.
