Elevated above the Bajo Flores skyline, the Barrio Mariano Castex tells a unique story. The neighborhood, also known as Conjunto San Pedrito, honors the distinguished physician Mariano Rafael Castex. Barrio Mariano Castex isn’t your typical neighborhood. It’s a housing complex. It’s a mix of low-rise monoblocks and towering residential buildings, creating a distinct silhouette against the Buenos Aires sky. Construction of Barrio Mariano Castex happened in stages throughout the 1970s. The initial phase focused on nine monoblocks, each with a ground floor and three additional stories. These buildings, offering 1048 homes, were completed between 1969 and 1973. Later, eight 14-story towers joined the skyline, completing the complex by the late 1970s. The Municipal Housing Commission (CMV) envisioned the Conjunto Urbano San Pedrito. Their aim was twofold. They wanted to relocate individuals displaced by the extension of 9 de Julio Avenue while addressing the housing needs of the middle and lower classes. In 2009, the Buenos Aires legislature approved a revitalization project for Barrio Mariano Castex. This initiative aimed to enhance the neighborhood with amenities like trash cans, benches, and bus stop shelters, along with restoring the buildings’ facades. This project underscores the ongoing commitment to the well-being of the residents and the preservation of this unique urban landscape.
