Imagine walking down a street in a small village, surrounded by rolling hills, and you see a sign that says “Barrio Abayubá”. This is where we are today, in a charming neighborhood in the heart of Montevideo. The Barrio Abayubá, named after a fearless indigenous warrior, stands as a reflection of Uruguay’s rich historical tapestry. Did you know that the village was initially founded in 1873 by three dedicated men: Florencio Escardó, Marcelino Santurio, and José Mayán? They had a vision for a thriving community on this land, and the village started to grow, albeit rather slowly. It took almost 15 years for the population to reach one hundred people. That’s almost too slow for a modern village, but then it was a different time. What might have been just farmland in the 1800s, eventually became a more bustling place in the 1900s. That was because the railway came through, bringing with it cattle from all across Uruguay. Imagine how exciting that must have been! The village expanded, but at its peak, there were no more than 219 inhabitants living in Barrio Abayubá in 1938. It was a time of great change and progress for the village, bringing with it a sense of community and a spirit of resilience. Today the location is a charming mix of old homes built with wood and brick, interspersed with modern structures, the legacy of the village’s founders and its history, a hidden gem in Uruguay.
