Have you ever felt the whisper of ancient secrets? Here before you stands the Barranco de los Encantados also known as the Barranco de los Enamorados. This is no ordinary ravine. It’s a place where the whispers of the past echo through the fossilized dunes.
The Barranco de los Encantados is a geological marvel. It’s a testament to Fuerteventura’s ancient history. Millions of years ago this area lay beneath the Atlantic. Volcanic activity about 135000 years ago changed all that. The land rose and the seabed was exposed.
The resulting sandstone formation is breathtaking. Towering walls of marine sand surround you. Some reach over 20 meters high. You’ll feel as if the sea itself is just around the next bend. The wind and water have sculpted the ravine’s whimsical shapes. They have created stunning formations for millennia.

The ravine has two names. Barranco de los Encantados the Ravine of the Enchanted comes from a phenomenon called “Bayuyo”. Around the summer solstice small fog banks form. The Mahos the original inhabitants believed these were the spirits of their ancestors returning from the sea. They celebrated with offerings.
The name Barranco de los Enamorados the Ravine of the Lovers is more recent. It dates from the 20th century. Couples from Tindaya and El Cotillo sought its seclusion. They came here for romantic evenings.
The Barranco de los Encantados is a 4 kilometer long circular trail. It takes about 2.5 hours to walk. The trail is moderately smooth. It is accessible to most but families with small children might find the Cañada Melián route easier. Remember to bring water sunscreen and a hat. Shade is scarce. The best time to visit is early morning. Avoid the midday heat.
