Established in 2011, Barnet and Southgate College stands as a beacon of further education in North London. The college emerged from the merger of Barnet College and Southgate College. Barnet College itself was formed in 2000. It combined the old Barnet College and Hendon College. The Wood Street campus has a rich history. It has been a center for vocational education since the 19th century. Before the merger, Barnet College had campuses in Whetstone and North Finchley. Hendon College, established in 1973, once had four sites. These were in Colindale, Hendon, Burnt Oak, and Mill Hill.

Southgate College began as Southgate Technical College in 1962. Its buildings on the high street were finished in 1963.
