In 1993 the members of the Magyar Karszt \u00e9s Barlangkutat\u00f3 T\u00e1rsulat created this special place. The Hungarian Karst and Cave Research Society, or MKBT, established this garden. They dedicated it to those who died in various accidents. The Barlangkutat\u00f3 eml\u00e9kkert serves as a poignant reminder of their sacrifices.
Within this rock garden are bronze nameplates. Each plate is mounted on a stone block. These plaques commemorate the cavers who tragically lost their lives. Budapest is known for its extensive cave systems. Many kilometers of unknown cave passages are still being discovered. These lie beneath the city. The cave systems beneath R\u00f3zsadomb-Sz\u00e9pv\u00f6lgy total nearly 58 kilometers. This shows the vastness of what lies hidden.
These caves began forming in the Triassic period. That was approximately 200 to 220 million years ago. At that time, limestone and dolomite masses deposited. These masses later formed much of the Buda Hills. Marine sediments covered the Triassic layers.
Around 15 to 20 million years ago the Buda Hills started rising. The well-karstified rocks gradually surfaced. Simultaneously, the Pesti Plain’s base sank. Impermeable clay rocks covered the Triassic sediments.
In the karst rocks, infiltrating waters could flow. Impermeable sediments directed heated waters. This happened along fracture lines. These waters surfaced in springs. Examples are Luk\u00e1cs, R\u00e1c, and Gell\u00e9rt Baths.
The caves formed where warm and cold karst waters mixed. Water once completely filled these void systems. This created complex maze-like passage systems. Unique mineral formations developed later. These included popcorn-like formations. There were also aragonite and gypsum deposits.
Before the 20th century, no large caves were known. This was because they lacked natural entrances. Mining operations first opened up cave sections. Later, house foundation deepenings did the same. Channel constructions also revealed caves. Moln\u00e1r J\u00e1nos Cave’s underwater passages were found by divers.
Hungary’s longest cave system is the P\u00e1l-v\u00f6lgyi system. It stretches 32 kilometers. This system formed by connecting eight caves. The P\u00e1l-v\u00f6lgyi Cave was discovered in 1904.
Later research expanded the cave system yearly. New sections boasted diverse mineral formations. The M\u00e1ty\u00e1s-hegyi Cave became known in the 1920s. For decades the dream was to connect P\u00e1l-v\u00f6lgyi and M\u00e1ty\u00e1s-hegyi Caves. This finally happened in December 2001.
