Founded by Charlemagne in the 8th century Bardowick flourished. It became a significant commercial center in Northern Germany. A bishopric was established there. Bardowick thrived until its destruction in 1189. Henry the Lion razed the city to the ground. Only the churches survived this devastating event. Before its destruction Bardowick was the most prosperous commercial city in Northern Germany. The Longobardi a Germanic tribe were central to Bardowick’s early history. Some believe the colonization of Lombardy started from here. Bardowick’s name is derived from the Longobardi. It was first mentioned in 795 AD. Otto I raised it to city status in 972. The collegiate church of Saints Peter and Paul was first recorded in 1146. Prince-Bishop Tammo further privileged this church in 1186. The present-day church building a Lutheran church was constructed between 1389 and 1485. It is sometimes called the Bardowicker Dom. Dom is a German word used for both collegiate churches and cathedrals. After 1400 Bardowick became a successful center for vegetable growing.
