Stretching before us is Barbaros Bulvarı. It is more than just a street. It’s a vital artery of Istanbul. This boulevard connects Beşiktaş Square to Zincirlikuyu. It marks a crucial part of Istanbul’s Central Business District. This area thrives north of Taksim Square.
Barbaros Bulvarı got its name from Hayreddin Barbarossa. He was a famous Ottoman admiral. His tomb rests in Beşiktaş. He lived from about 1478 to 1546. The boulevard honors his legacy.
Construction started in 1957. It was part of a city redevelopment project. Italian city planner Luigi Piccinato designed it. Prime Minister Adnan Menderes initiated the project. The boulevard opened to traffic in 1958. It was first known as Yıldız Yokuşu or Yıldız Yolu. This is because it runs through the Yıldız neighborhood.
Think back to the 1960s. The area around Barbaros Bulvarı looked quite different. There were few buildings then. Instead, mulberry groves and meadows surrounded the boulevard. Small gardens dotted the landscape. Modest houses were scattered around. The 1960s brought rapid construction. Barbaros Bulvarı quickly transformed.
Today, Barbaros Bulvarı stretches 3.1 km. That is about 1.9 miles. It rises from 1.5 meters above sea level in Beşiktaş. By the time it reaches Zincirlikuyu, it’s at 135 meters. That is about 443 feet. The section from Beşiktaş Square to Balmumcu is wide. It measures 50 meters. The slope here is about 8%. From Balmumcu to Zincirlikuyu the boulevard narrows. It is 30 meters wide. The slope is gentler at 2–3%.
Barbaros Bulvarı became even more important after 1973. That was when the Bosphorus Bridge opened. It provided the first direct route between Europe and Asia. Barbaros Bulvarı feeds into the Bosphorus Bridge. It carries the inner-city motorway O-1.
Urban transformation continues around Barbaros Bulvarı. It remains one of Beşiktaş’s most valuable areas. One reason is the stunning Bosphorus view. Another reason is its role as a connector. It links Beşiktaş Coast to Zincirlikuyu. It also connects to the Levent-Maslak line.
Several significant projects are underway here. These projects include Barbaros 48. Kempinski Residences Balmumcu is another. New projects will likely emerge in the future. They will extend towards Beşiktaş.
Many bus lines serve Barbaros Bulvarı. These include the 27E, 28O and 29A. Several minibus lines also operate here. The U1 and U2 lines connect Beşiktaş with Ulus and Zincirlikuyu.
