In the heart of Budapest, the Baptisták Árvaháza Plaque whispers a story of compassion and resilience. This unassuming marker commemorates the Baptist orphanage that once stood on this very spot. It reminds us of a time when faith and community converged to care for those in need. The Baptisták Árvaháza, or Baptist Orphanage, was established in Ócsa in 1914. It found a new home in Budapest in 1917, eventually settling in a building on Kis-Gellérthegy in 1922. Pál Beharka, a member of the Baptist Charity Committee, became the orphanage’s caretaker. He nurtured not only the physical well-being of the children but also their spiritual growth. Daily services were held for the staff and children. Additional gatherings took place at Fekete’s apartment. These gatherings laid the groundwork for establishing a formal church community. However, there was a significant obstacle. A pub occupied the ground floor of the orphanage building. The landlord refused to relinquish the space for two years. Finally, in 1924, the pub was converted into a prayer hall. This paved the way for the official formation of the Baptist Orphanage Church on November 17, 1924. The church began with 30 members, and Pál Beharka served as their pastor. He guided both the orphanage and the church. The Baptisták Árvaháza Plaque stands as a testament to his dedication. It’s a reminder of the transformative power of faith, even in challenging times.
