“What began as a humble vision has blossomed into a beacon of faith.” That’s how many describe the Baptist Bible Church here in Manila.
The Baptist Bible Church’s story began with early Evangelical Christians. They arrived in the Philippines in 1898. The American Baptist Missionary Union played a vital role. They established the Central Philippine University. They also founded the Baptist Center Church. These were established alongside the Iloilo Mission Hospital between 1905 and 1907.
In 1928 a pivotal moment occurred. Dr Raphael Thomas established the First Baptist Church of Manila. He was a former missionary. He worked with the American Baptist Foreign Missions Society. He was also a pioneer of the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism. The church was first located on Padre Faura Street.
The Baptist Bible Church marked a significant milestone in 1956. It ordained Rev Antonio F Ormeo. He was its first Filipino pastor. His leadership shaped the church.
In 1973 the Baptist Bible Church relocated to Project 6 in Quezon City. It was initially a temporary structure. But the church found its new home. With support from brethren in Singapore a three-story building was dedicated in 1981. Construction then began on a four-story church structure.
After 32 years of ministry Rev Antonio F Ormeo retired in 1987. Rev Ebenezer T Nacita became the interim senior pastor. In 1989 he was appointed Senior Pastor. He served until 2022.
Over the years the Baptist Bible Church has supported many other churches. This included pastoral training. The church offered counseling and rehabilitation. It assisted with church planting. It supported local and international missionaries. The Baptist Bible Church ran Bible institutes. It helped churches become self-sufficient. They became self-propagating. They became self-managing.
Looking back key figures shaped the church. From 1928 to 1932 pioneering pastors guided the flock. Dr Thomas. Dr Paul Culley. USN Capt Ellis Skolfield. Later Dr Russell Jones led from 1932 to 1935. Rev Edward Bomm followed from 1935 to 1936. Rev Samuel Fisk ministered from 1936 to 1940.
During World War II Manila fell to Japanese forces. Missionaries were incarcerated in concentration camps. Despite this the church’s spirit endured.
After the war Rev Edwin Spahr served from 1947 to 1949. Rev Bernard Bancroft led from 1950 to 1953. Rev Richard Durham followed from 1953 to 1956. Each pastor contributed to the church’s growth.
The Baptist Bible Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. Its history reflects dedication. It shows commitment to spreading the Gospel. From its humble beginnings to its current presence it continues to impact lives. It embodies the spirit of its founders.
