Fifty years of stories. That’s what Banstead Library represents. Standing before this building you’re not just looking at bricks and mortar. You’re looking at a community’s shared history. A history spanning decades.
Banstead Library isn’t just a place to borrow books. It’s a vibrant hub. It’s been a cornerstone of the community since its opening in 1961. Alderman Sidney Ripley himself dedicated this very building. He envisioned a place where those who seek knowledge would find much. And he was right.
This two-story building originally held 27000 books. It boasted a staff workroom. There was even domestic accommodation. A travelling library garage was also present. Can you imagine? A roof garden overlooked the main hall. This library was far more than just a collection of books.
In 1927 a village centre run by volunteers laid the groundwork. The current library building however was a significant upgrade costing £40000. It was a purpose-built space designed to serve the community’s needs.
Today the library isn’t just about books. It offers computers printers and free wi-fi. It’s a modern space yet it retains its charm. It still houses the Banstead Local History Centre. Here you’ll find census records parish registers and photographs. Local history enthusiasts can spend hours exploring the archives.
The library staff actively contribute to the community. They assist with applications for free bus passes. They also host events like the 50th-anniversary party. This celebration featured comedian Tim Vine a local resident. The event included face painting and live music. It was a testament to the library’s role in community life.
