After the Napoleonic Wars, Bonn became part of Prussia in 1815. It joined the German Empire in 1871. Bonn acquired military significance during World War II. It was strategically located on the Rhine. The US 1st Infantry Division captured the city in March 1945.

Bonn became the de facto capital of West Germany in 1949. The Bundestag met in Bonn’s Bundeshaus. Bonn drafted and adopted the Basic Law. This is Germany’s current constitution. Bonn was the political center of West Germany. This era is known as the Bonn Republic.

After reunification, Berlin became the capital again in 1990. Bonn retained significant government presence as a Federal City. Ministries still have offices here.
