Step into the captivating world of Bank Indonesia. This majestic building in Jakarta’s Old Town holds centuries of financial history. It stands as a testament to Indonesia’s economic journey.

The Bank Indonesia Museum housed within these walls tells a fascinating story. It begins in 1828 with De Javasche Bank. This was the central bank of the Dutch East Indies. It issued the Netherlands Indies gulden. The original building stood on the site of Batavia’s Inner Hospital. This hospital was abandoned in 1780. The building was then sold and later acquired by De Javasche Bank in 1831.

The old hospital was demolished. A new building designed by Eduard Cuypers was constructed. Cuypers was a renowned Dutch architect. He skillfully incorporated Indonesian elements into the Neo-Renaissance design. The building’s front facade was completed in 1909. The inner courtyard was renovated in 1926.

De Javasche Bank continued to operate during the Japanese occupation. It even printed the first Rupiah note in 1944. After Indonesia’s independence in 1945 the bank was nationalized as Bank Indonesia in 1953. A new headquarters was built in 1962. This left the original building to fall into disrepair.

In 2006 restoration began. The building was transformed into a museum. It was officially opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on July 21 2009. The Museum Bank Indonesia now displays a vast collection of old currencies. These range from the pre-colonial era to the present. It showcases the history of banking and trade in Indonesia. This includes eras like the spice trade and the 1997 economic crisis.

The museum offers an immersive experience. Visitors journey through Indonesia’s financial history. They learn about monetary policies and payment systems. Interactive exhibits and multimedia displays bring the past to life. The entrance fee is only Rp5000. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Today Bank Indonesia stands tall. It’s a symbol of Indonesia’s economic strength. The museum within its walls is a treasure trove of knowledge. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in Indonesia’s rich history and financial development. Take some time to explore.
