“Did you know this school carries a name that echoes the spirit of Bangladesh?” Right here, in the heart of London, stands Bangabandhu Primary School. While it might seem like any other school at first glance, its name holds a fascinating story. Bangabandhu Primary School opened in a temporary location in January 1989. It then moved to its permanent home here on Wessex Street in November 1991. The school’s governors wanted a name that reflected the spirit of Bangladesh. They chose “Bangabandhu,” which means “Friend of Bengal.” It was a title given to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a key figure in Bangladesh’s fight for independence in 1971. This makes Bangabandhu Primary School more than just a place of learning. It stands as a symbol of cultural pride and a tribute to a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s history.
