Born from reclaimed land Bandar Sri Pinang stands proudly. This modern neighbourhood in George Town Penang tells a story of transformation. It began in 1997 with the Jelutong Expressway project later renamed the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway. This highway aimed to ease traffic congestion connecting the city centre to the Penang Bridge.

Funding proved a challenge. The Penang state government cleverly exchanged development rights for the expressway. IJM Corporation a Malaysian conglomerate received rights to develop 368 acres of land. Much of this land was reclaimed from the Penang Strait. The project included low-cost and luxury housing commercial spaces and light industrial developments. The project took seven years to complete. Bandar Sri Pinang was ready by 2014.

The neighbourhood’s coastal promenade bears a special name. It’s called Karpal Singh Drive honouring the late politician Karpal Singh. This promenade is now a popular spot. Bandar Sri Pinang also boasts the Wesley Methodist School Penang International. This school offers the Cambridge International curriculum. It opened its doors in 2018.

The area continues to evolve. In 2025 construction began on the Bandar Sri Pinang station. This station is part of the Mutiara LRT line a light rail transit system. It’s expected to open in 2031 significantly improving transportation in the area. Bandar Sri Pinang is a testament to innovative planning. It’s a blend of modern development and thoughtful tributes to the past. This neighbourhood demonstrates Penang’s constant growth and progress. It also shows the resilience and ingenuity of the people who call it home. It is a modern marvel built on the foundations of strategic planning and community spirit.
