Wow. Look at this place. This is the Band Box Diner. It’s the oldest continuously operating diner in Minneapolis’s Elliot Park neighborhood. Imagine it in 1939. Harry and Bert Weisman opened this very spot. They were later known as Harry and Bert Wyman. They changed their last name to escape antisemitism rampant in Minneapolis at the time. A smart move considering the discrimination they faced in housing employment and social circles.

The Band Box isn’t just any diner. It’s a piece of history. This little building was made by the Butler Manufacturing Company. They were known for making things like agricultural bins not diners. The Band Box was one of a kind. The buildings were designed to be portable. They were even strong enough to move. This one’s stayed put though. It’s a testament to their resilience and the community’s love for this little eatery.

This Band Box is a survivor. The Wymans built 15 of these diners. By 1972 this was the only one left. Can you believe it? They sold the whole chain in 1953. It’s amazing this one lasted. They even had a unique business model. Each Band Box had its own menu. The managers decided what to serve. They even had strong ties to their local neighborhoods.

This location has quite a story. It’s been a local landmark since 2000. Old timers say it was once a place for shady deals. They even say Kid Cann a notorious gangster hung out here. He played cards in the back. The Band Box has seen a lot. It’s been in movies too. It’s in the intro to a Pere Ubu music video. It’s also in the background of D2 The Mighty Ducks.

The Band Box isn’t just a diner. It’s a time capsule. A place where history and delicious food meet. A reminder of a bygone era. A testament to the enduring spirit of Minneapolis. Step inside. Let the memories of the Band Box linger long after you’ve finished your meal.
