Gazing out at the vast South China Sea, a mischievous glint flickers in the eyes of the old fairy. He’s just finished etching a chessboard onto a large, flat rock atop Ban Co Peak. The panoramic view from Da Nang’s rooftop, as the locals call it, is truly mesmerizing. He chuckles, picturing the bewildered face of his next opponent. Suddenly, a figure appears, the chess master De Thich, known throughout the celestial realm for his skill. Their game begins, a clash of minds amidst the tranquil beauty of Son Tra Peninsula. Days turn into nights as the two fairies remain locked in their battle of wits, neither able to gain a decisive advantage on the slopes of Ban Co Peak. One morning, the playful sounds of goddesses bathing at a nearby beach, later known as Tien Sa Beach, drift up to Ban Co Peak. De Thich, captivated by their laughter, loses his focus. He makes a fatal error, handing victory to the old fairy. With a triumphant grin, the fairy ascends back to the heavens, leaving a perplexed De Thich pondering his defeat on Ban Co Peak. He tries to reconstruct the game, to understand where he went wrong, but the solution eludes him. He remains on Ban Co Peak, a statue now, forever contemplating the chessboard. Locals, remembering the legendary game, built a stone chessboard on Ban Co Peak in honor of the fairies. Today, visitors to Ban Co Peak can admire the breathtaking landscape, watch the sunrise paint the sky with vibrant hues, and even sit at the stone chessboard, imagining themselves playing against the legendary De Thich. From the peak’s 700-meter vantage point, the entire city of Da Nang stretches out below, a tapestry of serene beaches, lush green mountains, and a dynamic cityscape. Whether you’re a chess enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Ban Co Peak offers an unforgettable experience.
