What’s an “Ikea building,” you ask? Well, cast your eyes upon Baltic Quay. This striking structure, with its distinctive blue and yellow color scheme (at least initially!), earned it that humorous nickname. Baltic Quay is a testament to the transformation of London’s Docklands. Built in 1989, during the massive London Docklands Development Corporation project, Baltic Quay was envisioned as a mixed-use space. The idea was to have shops and businesses on the ground floor, offices on the first two floors, and then apartments above. However, fate, as they say, had other plans. While the unique architecture with its vaulted roofs and circular windows bagged awards and made it a local landmark, the commercial aspect didn’t quite take off. By 1995, the office spaces were converted to residential, and soon the ground floor followed suit. Today, Baltic Quay stands as a purely residential building. It’s rumored to house a fascinating mix of residents, including a High Court Judge and even a Chief of Police! Baltic Quay stands as a symbol of change. Its story, from a planned commercial hub to a coveted residential address. It reflects the evolving landscape of London itself, a city where history and modernity continuously intertwine.
