Hidden in plain sight on Islands Brygge, lies Ballonparken. It’s a unique community. Some even call it a miniature Christiania. Ballonparken whispers tales of a vibrant past. Originally, in 1872, it served as a tent camp for the Army’s Artillery Division. Ten years later, the first wooden barracks appeared. These modest structures marked the very beginnings of Islands Brygge. Today, around 30 of these original houses still stand in Ballonparken. They have witnessed a fascinating evolution. After World War II, they provided shelter for German refugees. In 1948, male students from outside Copenhagen moved in. The 1970s saw a new wave of inhabitants: hippies and free spirits. They transformed Ballonparken into the bohemian haven it is today. Ballonparken’s story also includes a remarkable structure: a 100-year-old balloon hangar. The Army’s Balloon Corps once stored observation balloons within its walls. Today, the hangar houses the riding club “Ridevenner”. It recently underwent a restoration by Realdania By & Byg, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Ballonparken is more than just a collection of houses. It is a living testament to Copenhagen’s ever-changing landscape. It stands as a unique blend of history, community, and unconventional living.
